From feelings of guilt to sadness from leaving behind the colleagues that you’ve gotten to know over the years, it’s easy to get attached to a job and company making it difficult to leave. But there are plenty of valid reasons why resigning may be the best choice. It’s important to remember that if you are considering such a move, then you want to leave on a positive note to set yourself up for a smooth transition. Here are some ways to resign with ease.

Knowing When It’s Time to Go

There are plenty of valid reasons why resigning might be in your best interests including:

  • You don’t feel appreciated.
  • Your employer is not paying a competitive salary.
  • Changes in management.
  • You no longer feel challenged.
  • Lack of paid time off.

These are just a few of the most common reasons why candidates seek new opportunities.

It’s Business, Nothing Personal

Start your resignation by providing sufficient notice to your manager; two weeks is still the minimum standard for most roles. Submit a respectful letter that outlines your plan of departure. Thank your employer for the opportunities that they provided. Remember, quitting a job is a part of the business world and shouldn’t be taken personally even if you are friends with your boss. Some employers offer exit interviews so be ready to discuss any details regarding how the company can improve going forward. Don’t be surprised if you receive a counteroffer and more money to stay. But most career experts advise against accepting this offer because it’s typically just a knee-jerk reaction to keep you around until a replacement is found. Express your appreciation for the proposed offer and stay focused on the new opportunity. Be honest, yet concise about your future plans.

Do’s and Don’ts

As tempting as it might be to brag about your new job to coworkers or managers, you don’t want to contribute to feelings of envy. Even though there are some rare instances when it’s not possible to leave on good terms, do try your best to remain positive by remembering any ways the company has benefited you. Do offer to help train your replacement to ensure a smooth transition. Say goodbye to coworkers via email and include your contact information to maintain your network.

Whether you’re retiring or moving on to a higher-level position in the biotech or pharmaceutical industry, resigning from a job is a natural progression in the working world. Having the talk with your boss might not be easy, but if you show respect, then it will usually be reciprocated.
