Self-care is usually the first thing that people compromise due to the pressure to excel in their professional lives. This “keeping up” mentality is what leads people to career burnout from working long hours and neglecting their personal welfare. It’s difficult to juggle personal and professional obligations at the same time. But if you’re feeling mentally or physically exhausted, then you need to prioritize self-care before it’s too late. Here are some tips to help you prioritize self-care for a better quality of life.

Changing Habits

Many people enter the biotech industry because it provides them with a better work-life balance. Choosing the right career is a good place to start when it comes to improving quality of life, but there are also plenty of other bad habits that can be holding you back. Smoking, eating an unhealthy diet, and not getting enough sleep are some of the most common things that are detrimental to self-care. Although some lifestyle changes are harder to break than others, sometimes it’s as easy as updating your mattress to get more sleep or cleaning your home to feel more motivated and less anxious. Disconnecting is always easier said than done but unplugging from your devices for even a couple of hours every day helps prevent burnout. Focus on refueling by taking regular “me” time by getting involved in activities you enjoy. Once you build momentum, it will be easier to exercise, read, or get a massage without feeling guilty. Ultimately these practices will help you feel more energized.

Start Small

The snowball method is typically the best approach when it comes to improving self-care. You don’t have to dedicate several hours each day to see results. Start by listing reasonable and attainable goals in your daily schedule. Take advantage of any downtime, even if it’s only a few minutes, by taking a quick walk, meditating, etc. Belly breathing is a very effective calming technique that won’t take any extra time from your schedule. If you’re constantly suffering from being over scheduled, then consider reprioritizing your everyday tasks. Focus on dedicating more time to habits that prioritize your well-being.

Recognize the Benefits

There really is no downside to taking good care of yourself. When we feel better, we function better. Here are some of the main benefits of regular self-care:

  • Less anxiety and stress
  • Higher productivity
  • Better mental well-being
  • Stronger immune system
  • Lower risk for heart disease and diabetes

Self-care should be your number one priority. Your happiness and overall life satisfaction depends on it. Being healthy and well rested will allow to be fully present in all aspects of your life.
